Armadillos Jump?

Well, I wanted to share with you something I learned while on our trip to Granger, IN. Not sure how we got on the subject ... but Marshall (the all knowing) informed us that when armadillos are frightened suddenly, like by a car, they will jump straight up! Who knew? This is not good news for the armadillo! I did believe Marshall, but still wanted to Google it ... this is what I found ...

Why Does the Armadillo Jump?

The armadillo jumps because he is surprised. Here is a photograph of an actual armadillo caught in mid-jump! Armadillos prefer to defend themselves by: diving into their burrows, hastily digging a new burrow, and the best known defense, rolling into a ball. In addition to these behaviours, sometimes when they are surprised, they will jump straight up. Unfortunately, this is no defense against automobiles, their main Texas predator!

See ... the trip was very educational! :)

Who needs Wikipedia when you've got Marshallpedia!
